SDN-cloud: a power aware resource management system for efficient energy optimization

Abstract: PurposeIn modern cloud services, resource provisioning and allocation are significant for assigning the available resources in efficient way. Resource management in cloud becomes challenging due to high energy consumption at data center (DC), virtual machine (VM) migration, high operational cost and overhead on DC.Design/methodology/approachIn this paper, the authors proposed software-defined networking (SDN)-enabled cloud for resource management to reduce energy consumption in DC. SDN-cloud comprises four pha… Show more

“…Software-defined networks have also been recently used for energy optimization purposes [18,19]. In [18], a binary linear programming model was proposed to manage the switches and SDN controllers based on different metrics, including traffic on the link, several flows at the network edge, and the distance between switches and controllers.…”

“…The results in [18] revealed that the proposed approach saves up to 40% of the energy consumption. Shrabanee et al [19] proposed an SDN-based resource management approach. In particular, the SDN enabled the cloud to manage resources efficiently, thus consuming less energy.…”

“…Energy optimization: The energy consumption resulted from network and computing resources is still very large, which negatively affects the total costs of the providers and the users, in addition to environmental pollution [162]. The use of more meta-heuristic algorithms helps to minimize the issue of ensuring the fulfilment of the SLA and energy-saving when taking into account that one is not influenced by the other.…”
