SDN for segment based flow routing of DASH

Abstract: In this paper we propose an SDN based dynamic path selection for HTTP-based video streaming. MPEG-DASH is a recently proposed standard allowing rate adaptation over HTTP. On the other hand, Software Defined Networking (SDN) is a new network architecture, which allows determining routes of packet flows by an external controller software. In this study we develop an optimization model aiming to obtain maximum throughput for DASH services by selecting the optimal paths for video packet flows over SDN. The simulat… Show more

“…In this system, dynamic flow routing is not implemented. Dynamic re-routing according to the bitrate of the video segments for dynamic adaptive HTTP streaming (DASH) clients is proposed in [5]. To provide quality adaptation, the video files having different quality representations are stored on the DASH server.…”

“…If the problem is in SDN network, then a different path is selected, otherwise the server is changed [17]. Path assignment by considering the bitrate of the segments and path capacities for increasing DASH clients' performance running over SDN networks is proposed in [18]. The server signals the controller to give information about the bitrate of the current segment and the paths are changed if the capacity of the current path is not enough to convey that segment packets.…”

“…The type of encoder immensely influences QoE and is applicable for scalable video codecs (SVC) that inspect streaming using H.264/SVC with wavelet-based coding. Authors of [70,71,72,73,74] introduced a new approach to encode and segment video information for adaptively streaming H.264 video. They also achieved up to 30% reduction in encoding bitrate while maintaining the same or higher quality of video.…”
