Halfway through Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, only 15 percent of the goals have been reached. As a carbon storage and climate change mitigation mechanism, blue carbon is closely related to sustainable development goals and plays an important role in the global carbon cycle. In spite of its great potential, blue carbon still faces several challenges in terms of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Herein, this review aims to retrieve all known impacts of blue carbon on sustainable development through research published on the Web of Science from 2012 to 2023 using a sequence of bibliometric analyses. Keywords such as “blue carbon” and “sustain*” (including “sustainability”, “sustainable”, etc.) were used for article extraction. CiteSpace, a science mapping tool, was used to capture and visually present the bibliometric information in the research about blue carbon and sustainable development. Upon reviewing the existing literature, no study has concentrated on bibliometrically analyzing and visualizing studies about blue carbon and sustainable development. This study sets out to fill this gap by examining the key areas of concentration in published works on blue carbon and sustainable development from 2012 to date. Moreover, the integration of blue carbon and sustainable development may help to develop supportive policies for marine carbon sinks. Despite the valuable contribution of this study to the blue carbon and sustainable development body of knowledge, generalizations of the results must be made cautiously due to the use of a single database, which in this case is the Web of Science.

The use of antibacterial from natural ingredients can as an alternative, one of them is seagrass Enhalus acoroides which is known to have inhibiting active compounds bacterial growth. Metabolites from seagrass are known to be biologically active is an important biomedical and can be used as a drug potential. The use of antibacterial from natural ingredients is alternative approach. Bacteria Salmonella typhi is a genus of gram-negative enterobacteria sticks that cause typhoid, paratyphoid, and foodborne diseases and resistant bacteria. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to analyze the activity test antibacterial on Enhalus acoroides seagrass against Salmonella typhi bacteria. The methods used in this study were seagrass extraction, phytochemical tests, and antibacterial activity tests. The results obtained from the research are crude extracts with solvents methanol, ethyl acetate and nhexane with a concentration of 500 ppm was the most effective extract concentration in inhibiting bacterial growth Salmonella typhi with a weak category. Furthermore, characteristic Antibacterial crude extract of seagrass Enhalus acoroides was bacteriostatic. This study suggests that the influence of polarity types solvent on antibacterial activity of seagrass extract Enhalus acoroides against the growth of Salmonella typhi bacteria.

A review of seagrass ecosystem services: providing nature-based solutions for a changing world

Seagrasses are marine flowering plants, which form extensive meadows in intertidal and shallow water marine environments. They provide a wide range of ecosystem services, which directly or indirectly benefit humans and can be grouped into four broad categories: provisioning (e.g. food production); regulating (e.g. carbon sequestration); supporting (e.g. primary production); and cultural (e.g. recreational, and eco-tourism). This study provides a review of publications focusing on seagrass ecosystem services provision to identify knowledge gaps and improve our understanding of the use of these habitats as nature-based solutions to societal challenges, such as climate change. Results showed that some ecosystem services, namely food provision, carbon sequestration, and maintenance of biodiversity/nursery habitats receive a higher level of focus and attention than others, such as regulation of diseases and social relations, which are rarely, if ever, included in studies. It is clear that in order to fully comprehend the nature-based solution potential held by seagrass ecosystems, studies need to consider ecosystem services as a whole, and also combine and share results across global regions, to better understand the potential impacts of degradation and loss of these ecosystems worldwide. Suggestions include applying novel technologies such as remote sensing and ecological niche modelling to address some of the main gaps in seagrass research, like meadow extent and connectivity within landscapes, to better incorporate preservation of seagrass ecosystems in marine management plans.
