Search For Neutrino-less Double Beta Decay Of 48Ca- Candles -

Abstract: The neutrino-less double beta decay is acquiring great interest after the confirmation of neutrino oscillation which demonstrated nonzero neutrino mass. In order to search for neutrino-less double beta decay of 48 Ca, we proposed the CANDLES project by using CaF 2 (pure) scintillators. Now we installed the CANDLES III system at the Kamioka underground laboratory. The CANDLES III system realizes the low background condition by a characteristic structure and data analyses for background rejection. Furthermore we… Show more

“…It consists of three stations (Corner, X-end, and Y-end), two arm tunnels (X-arm and Y-arm) 3 km in length, and several access tunnels. Under the same mountain, there are many neutrino experiments (Super-Kamiokande [11], KamLAND [12], and CANDLES [13]), dark matter experiments (NEWAGE [14], PICOLON [15], and XMASS (closed) [16]), and other R&D experiments, including those of CLIO [17], which is the prototype of KAGRA.…”

“…These phenomena have been observed with 𝛾-ray, but not with neutrinos. In the underground facility of Kamioka, the neutrino experiments such as Super-Kamiokande [15], KamLAND [16], and CANDLES [17] are running, and it might be possible for KAGRA to detect lightning events coincident with them. One of the most interesting events emitting GW and neutrinos is a supernovae explosion (e.g., [18]) for which the observation of lightning will be a good demonstration.…”
