Search for Symbol Sense Behavior: Students in Upper Secondary Education Solving Algebraic Physics Problems

Abstract: Students in upper secondary education encounter difficulties in applying mathematics in physics. To improve our understanding of these difficulties, we examined symbol sense behavior of six grade 10 physics students solving algebraic physic problems. Our data confirmed that students did indeed struggle to apply algebra to physics, mainly because they lacked both sufficient symbol sense behavior and basic algebraic skills. They used ad hoc strategies instead of correct, systematic rule-based procedures involvin… Show more

“…Therefore, learning and understanding physics is primary in learning in schools. However, Turşucu, Spandaw, & de Vries (2020) said that learning physics in schools tend to get stuck in a routine. The routine in question is the teacher gives formulas, examples of questions, and exercises done by students to get bored quickly.…”

“…Social studies learning problems that have been ongoing, include: 1) learning takes place in one direction, 2) there is no material connection with everyday life, 3) the use of learning media is still small (Meiarti & Ellianawati, 2019;Turşucu et al, 2020). Based on the results of observations and interviews, the fourth grade teacher at SD Negeri 1 Megati, the implementation of learning was carried out based on the syllabus and lesson plans.…”
