Search for time-reversal-symmetry violation in thallium fluoride using a jet source

Abstract: We have looked for a violation of time-reversal symmetry (T) in the molecule thallium fluoride using a rotationally cold beam from a jet source. Our method was to search for a frequency shift of the thallium nuclear magnetic resonance when an external electric field of 29.5 kV/cm was reversed with respect to a magnetic quantization axis. The measured shift, (1.4+2.4) X 10 Hz, was interpreted as a null result and constitutes a tenfold improvement in sensitivity over the previous measurement. Accordingly, our me… Show more

“…Consequently, η is not zero if the atom/molecule is well chosen [19,20]. For example the best measurement of the proton EDM comes from a measurement on TlF molecules [21], where the large size of the Tl nucleus ends up giving η ∼ 1 for the nuclear spin EDM interaction. The upper limit on the neutron EDM is known both directly, from measurements on free neutrons [22], and indirectly, from nuclear spin measurements on Hg atoms [23].…”

“…The P,T-odd nucleon-nucleon interaction can be modeled as a finite-range interaction [49], (59) where m π is the pion mass, m N is the nucleon mass, the σ 1,2 are the nucleon spins, the τ 1,2 are vectorized Pauli spin matrices, r 12 is the interparticle separation, and the constantsḡ 0 ,ḡ 1 , andḡ 2 determine the strengths of the isoscalar, isovector, and isotensor couplings, respectively.…”
