Searching for the “Active Ingredients” in Physical Rehabilitation Programs Across Europe, Necessary to Improve Mobility in People With Multiple Sclerosis: A Multicenter Study

Abstract: Background. Physical rehabilitation programs can lead to improvements in mobility in people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS). Objective: Identify which rehabilitation program elements are employed in real life and how they might impact mobility improvement in PwMS. Methods. Participants were divided into improved and non-improved mobility groups based on changes observed in the Multiple Sclerosis Walking Scale-12 following multimodal physical rehabilitation programs. Analyses were performed at group and subgroup… Show more

“…The answers of the individual PTs who completed this survey concurred with answers of center representatives in terms of the most frequently used PT interventions (balance and postural awareness) [7] but were in contrast with data from Kalron and colleagues regarding self-stretching [24]. The previous publication by Martinková et al [7] highlighted significant region differences in the use of PT interventions but also found other factors that matter.…”

“…This is not in line with recommendations that needs differ over the disease trajectory and with the level of disability and that intervention should be tailored accordingly [8]. These results are in line with those of Kalron et al [24] who did not find significant differences in the amount of therapy provision between the mildly and moderately-severely disabled subgroups.…”

“…Although the prevailing principle of individualization (European Multiple Sclerosis Platform, 2012) has been questioned in group settings (Kalron et al, 2019;Plow, Mathiowetz, and Lowe, 2009), an individualized intervention conducted in small groups was recently introduced and found feasible and effective on trunk control, balance and walking in individuals with MS (Arntzen et al, 2019;Dybesland and Normann, 2018;Normann, Salvesen, and Arntzen, 2016) From a professional perspective individualization within small groups is dependent on an initial individual assessment (Lahelle, Øberg, and Normann, 2018b), ongoing movement analyzes and adaptations through hands-on interactions (Lahelle, Øberg, and Normann, 2018a). Knowledge gained from the participant´s perspective regarding small groups is however limited.…”
