“…We hypothesized that specimens would contain predominantly chlorophyte pigments from Cladophora glomerata, which has proliferated (median biomass 170 g dw/m 2 , nearshore eastern Lake Erie, 1995Erie, to 2002Higgins et al, 2005), in response to the increased clarity of nearshore waters filtered by dreissenids, coupled with release of nutrients (Howell et al, 1996). In addition, we expected lesser amounts of diagnostic pigments from epiphytic diatoms (Stevenson and Stoermer, 1982;Malkin et al, 2009), cyanobacteria and a rhodophyte imported from marine waters (Sheath and Morison, 1982). Differences between sites were expected, from the fact that VBP is shallow (6.5 m) with coarse sediments and 5.4% organic matter, compared to PG which is deeper (17 m), with fine sediments and 14.8% organic matter (Bridoux et al, submitted for publication).…”
