Seasonal Abundance of Stable Flies and Filth Fly Pupal Parasitoids (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) at Florida Equine Facilities

Abstract: Beginning in November 2007 and continuing until December 2009, weekly stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans (L.), surveillance was conducted at four equine facilities near Ocala, FL, by using alsynite sticky traps for adults and by searching immature developmental sites for pupae. Adult stable fly trap captures were highly variable throughout the year, ranging from 0 to 1,400 flies per trap per farm. The greatest adult stable fly activity was observed during the spring months of March and April, with weekly three-tr… Show more

“…Different seasonal patterns were observed in S. calcitrans . A unimodal pattern with one annual peak is described in studies conducted in Denmark, where population peaks occur in July, and in Florida, U.S.A., where population peaks occur in March and April (Pitzer et al ., ; Skovgard & Nachman, ). Bimodal patterns with two separate annual peaks were observed in southwest France, where S. calcitrans populations peak in May–July and during November.…”

“…Only one male of S. bengalensis was seen and that was on farm 2. The variation in the abundance of Stomoxys species that were observed may have depended on the temperature, precipitation, types of trap, trap locations and trap height [1, 7, 10, 16]. Further studies are needed to evaluate whether these differences are associated with the location or other factors that attract Stomoxys species.…”

“…Population dynamics can be considered on two levels, spatial and temporal. Temporal dynamics of stable ßy populations have been addressed by several studies (Scholl 1986, Mullens and Meyer 1987, Lysyk 1993, Guo et al 1998, Broce et al 2005, Taylor et al 2007, Pitzer et al 2011, Skovgård and Nachman 2012. Those studies found temperature and precipitation to be primary determinants of stable ßy population levels.…”
