“…High drift densities were observed in very contrasting ecosystems like kryal and rithral alpine streams, were maximum densities were at 153 individuals m −3 , of which up to 93% were chironomids (Hieber, Robinson, & Uehlinger, ) and 550 m −3 in the flood plain of the Sacramento river (Benigno & Sommer, ). Most commonly measured drift densities are lower than 1 m −3 and approach the mean observed density of the Sinos River with 0.3 m −3 (Anderwald, Konar, & Humpesch, , Danube River, Austria; Ubero‐Pascal, Torralva, Oliva, & Malo, , Mundo River, Spain).
