ABSTRACT. The response of zooplankton, phytoplankton biomass (Chl-a concentration) and nutrients to the oceanographic variability in the Mexican Central Pacific was studied over three oceanographic surveys realized in 2010 (January, May and October). The highest zooplankton biomass (48 mL 1000 m -3 ) was registered in May when nitrites, nitrates, phosphates and silicates were also highest and mean Chl-a was 0.67 mg m -3. The lowest zooplankton biomass was registered in October, with a mean value of 25 mL 1000 m -3. Twenty-nine taxonomic groups of zooplankton were recorded, of which copepods contributed 71% of total abundance followed by chaetognaths (6%) and euphausiids (5%). Multivariate BEST test demonstrated that mixed layer depth and temperature at 25 m depth can explain the distribution of major zooplankton groups. The study area was influenced by El Niño conditions, which caused a seasonal shift. Coastal upwelling was evident until late summer, when geostrophic analysis showed a predominant SW component near the Jalisco coast. We suggest a possible top-down control of zooplankton grazing over phytoplankton, and acclimatization of both plankton groups to variability in environmental conditions induced by the transition from warm to cold ENSO phase.

Epipelagic copepods in Bahía Cupica, Colombian Pacific: species composition, distribution and temporal variation. The study of changes in abundance and composition of copepod species, at different temporal and spatial scales, help to understand the ecosystems function and how the oceanographic dynamics affects their variability and other resources abundances. Since very few studies have been developed on this group in Colombian Pacific coastal areas, the purpose of this study was to assess the spatial and temporal changes in the copepods community distribution at Cupica Bay, between December 2012 and February 2013. For this, oblique plankton hauls were performed along six transects perpendicular to the coast, in 22 stations, using a Bongo Net (30 cm diameter, 2.1 m large, with mesh size 250 µm and 500 µm) equipped with a flowmeter, during two contrasting oceanographic periods. The results showed significant changes in oceanographic conditions and superficial circulation patterns. Fifty two (52) copepods species were identified, from which thirty five (35) were new records for the Colombian Pacific. The biggest copepod abundance was recorded in February 2013 (28 604 ind. 100 m -3 ), and small copepods species were the most dominant. During December 2012, species of the order Poecilostomatida were the most abundant (58.2), but during February were the species of the order Calanoida (69.5 %). The community structure and species composition was characterized by five significant groups, three groups during December 2012 and two during February 2013, dividing the bay in different zones. A positive correlation between temperature and copepods assemblages was evident during both periods, but stronger during December 2012. The results suggested that community structure and species composition of resident copepods in North Colombian Pacific neritic zones, are modelled by the intensity of upwelling, superficial local pattern circulation, and continental freshwater discharges in the region. The results are helpful to understand the copepods community structure, and the future studies should attempt to examine other variables (e.g. effect of food available and oxygen concentration dissolved) to improve understanding of copepods structure in the Pacific coast region of Colombia. A comprehensive literature review shows that 12 types of pathogens, micropredators and parasites are reported to interact with chaetognaths, mostly digenean trematodes, cestodes and nematodes larval stages. Through analysis of 78,152 chaetognaths from a monthly zooplankton time series (Jan 1996-Dec 1998) collected in the Mexican Central Pacific twelve acanthocephalan larvae parasitizing chaetognaths were discovered. This is the first record of an acanthocephalan parasitizing chaetognaths, raising to 13 the types of symbionts known to interact with them (excluding predators). Cystacanth larval specimens of Corynosoma sp. (Polymorphidae) were observed parasitizing the head, trunk and caudal cavities of three of the eight chaetognath species inhabiting this tropical coastal region (Flaccisagitta enflata, Flaccisagitta hexaptera and Zonosagitta bedoti). Because Corynosoma sp. parasitized chaetognaths during different months and years (Jan-Feb 1996, Mar and Jul 1997, Jan, Jun, Aug-Sep 1998) and because the total length of these cystacanths varied between 165-480 µm, suggesting growth inside the hosts, we conclude that chaetognaths are intermediate hosts of Corynosoma sp. The twelve parasitized chaetognaths were juveniles (without gonads) or immature adults (none in reproductively mature stage IV); therefore Corynosoma may have a negative influence on host reproduction. Marine crustaceans (amphipods, decapods, copepods, mysids and euphausiids) and fishes are common intermediate or paratenic hosts of acanthocephalans. Fish, sea birds and marine mammals are definitive hosts for marine Corynosoma species. The present discovery implies that acanthocephalans are transmitted trophically through different intermediate hosts (crustaceans, chaetognaths and/or fish); thus chaetognaths can also be part of the marine acanthocephalan life cycle.
