The hydro-geomorphological background in microplastic (MP) deposition and mobilization is often neglected, though the sampling environment is the key point in a monitoring scheme. The aim of the study was to analyze the environmental driving factors of MP transport over three years (2020–2022) along a 750 km-long section of the Tisza River, Central Europe. The mean MP content of the fresh clayey sediments was 1291 ± 618 items/kg in 2020, and then it decreased (2021: 730 ± 568 items/kg; 2022: 766 ± 437 items/kg). The upstream and downstream sections were the most polluted due to improper local sewage treatment. In 2020, 63% of the sites were hotspot (≥2000 items/kg), but their number decreased to one-third in 2021 and 2022. MP pollution is influenced by highly variable environmental factors. (1) The geomorphological setting of a site is important, as most of the hotspots are on side bars. (2) The tributaries convey MP pollution to the Tisza River. (3) The bankfull or higher flood waves effectively rearrange the MP pollution. (4) The dams and their operation influence the downstream trend of MP pollution in the reservoir. (5) Downstream of a dam, the clear-water erosion increases the proportion of the pristine sediments; thus, the MP concentration decreases.

Escalating issues pertaining to the disposal of plastic waste have emerged as an alarming global concern, underscored by the environmental infiltration of fragmented plastic materials into terrestrial, aquatic, and atmospheric systems. This predicament is notably amplified within the African continent, where rudimentary waste management infrastructures exacerbate the situation. This review dissects the prevalence, abundance, and distribution of plastic litter and microplastics within diverse environmental compartments (namely, sediments, water bodies, and biota) across Africa. Detailed analysis of existing research findings highlights concentrations of plastic debris and microplastics, identifying the predominant types of polymers and shapes of particles present. It is observed that most African research endeavours have primarily concentrated on microplastics, albeit macroplastics or plastic litter posing substantial challenges as well. Marine environments have been the predominant focus of these studies, with freshwater ecosystems relatively understudied. The geographical focal points of these research efforts were primarily South Africa, Tunisia, and Nigeria. Conversely, a glaring lack of comprehensive studies addressing plastic pollution within terrestrial and atmospheric systems calls for urgent research attention. Documented evidence of plastic ingestion by diverse aquatic and terrestrial fauna, including insects, fish, birds, molluscs, and arthropods, reaffirms the pervasive nature of the problem within African water bodies. An evaluation of existing literature identifies polyester, polyethylene, and polypropylene as the most common types of plastics present within both freshwater and coastal systems. Unfortunately, a significant proportion of these studies failed to adequately characterize the identified plastics, thus obstructing the identification of potential sources. Consequently, it is imperative that future investigations prioritize polymer identification, which can facilitate the development and implementation of efficacious strategies for mitigating plastic pollution and curtailing environmental leakage of plastics.

Nehir, haliç ve lagünler, karasal ve deniz ekosistemleri arasında bağlantıyı sağlarken, tıpkı diğer kirleticilerde olduğu gibi sediment yapılarında da mikroplastik kirliliği hakkında kapsamlı bir profil ortaya koymaktadır. Bu çalışmada, Küçükçekmece Lagünü’nün üç farklı sucul alanından (deniz, kanal ve göl) alınan sediment örneklerinde mikroplastik bolluğu ve karakterizasyonunun belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Bu kapsamda, lagünde belirlenen 5 istasyondan 12 aylık (Mart 2019 – Şubat 2020) sediment örnekleri alınmıştır. Mikroplastik ön işlemlerine tabi tutulan sediment örneklerinde, stereomikroskop ile mikroplastik bolluğu sayımı ve kategorizasyonu (boyut, tip ve renk) yapılmıştır. Ortalama mikroplastik bolluğu 2922,32±517,35 MP/kg olarak belirlenmiş olup, tespit edilen ortalama mikroplastik bolluğu değeri, ülkemizde daha önce yapılmış benzer çalışmalara kıyasla 2,4 kat daha yüksek bulunmuştur. Liflerin (%59) baskın mikroplastik tipi olduğu, baskın mikroplastik renginin siyah (%42) olduğu ve MP boyutlarının %50’sinin 1-100 μm arasında olduğu belirlenmiştir. Mevsimsel mikroplastik dağılımı irdelendiğinde ise, en yüksek bolluk değerlerinin yağışlı sezon olan kış aylarında olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Çalışma alanında en yüksek ortalama mikroplastik bolluğuna sahip L1 istasyonu, Küçükçekmece Lagünü Bağlantı Alanı temsil etmekte olup, lagündeki tüm antropojenik baskıların hissedildiği istasyon olarak ortaya çıkmaktadır. Bu çalışma, dünyanın diğer bölgelerindeki benzer sediment alanları için mikroplastik bolluğu ve dağılımı hakkında temsili veriler sağlamayı amaçlamaktadır.
