Seasonal changes in water quality and Sargassum biomass in southwest Australia

Abstract: Sargassum C. Agardh is one of the most diverse genera of marine macroalgae and commonly inhabits shallow tropical and subtropical waters. This study aimed to investigate the effect of seasonality and the associated water quality changes on the distribution, canopy cover, mean thallus length and the biomass of Sargassum beds around Point Peron, Shoalwater Islands Marine Park, Southwest Australia. Samples of Sargassum and seawater were collected every three months from summer 2012 to summer 2014 from four differ… Show more

“…In Cancun, Mexico alone, the authorities estimate that the cleaning of each meter of coastline could range as high as a $1000.00. They have budgeted almost $10 million and hired approximately 5000 temporary workers to remove the seaweed that engulfed the Caribbean coast of Mexico (Hoang et al, 2016). The island of Tobago has even declared a state of natural disaster (http://ambergriscaye.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/ 506881/the-journey-of-the-sargassum.html).…”

“…Cleanup efforts by work crews may also worsen beach erosion. In addition, the decomposition of algae may lead to the alteration of water chemistry which subsequently causes the death of certain fish species susceptible to falling oxygen levels (Hoang et al, 2016).…”

“…The levels of dissolved oxygen (DO) in water was monitored by digital DO meter (YSI55; Perth Scientific, Australia). The concentrations of nitrate (NO 3 − ) and nitrite (NO 2 − ) were checked using Hach DR/890 Colorimeter (Hach, Loveland, CO, USA) following the method of cadmium reduction and diazotization (Hoang et al, 2016). Phosphate (PO 4 − ) level in water was examined by ascorbic acid standard 4500-PE method, as described by Huong (Mai, Fotedar & Fewtrell, 2010).…”
