Seasonal differences in the onset of the EBV-positive and -negative forms of paediatric Hodgkin's lymphoma

Abstract: In this study, we have shown that there are seasonal differences in the onset of the (Epstein -Barr virus) EBV-positive and -negative forms of paediatric Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL). This suggests aetiological differences between the two forms of this disease. EBVpositive HL might be a rare consequence of primary EBV infection.

“…Whether this reflects a non-specific increase in EBV replication as a result of infection or whether it represents an antigen-driven response remains to be determined; however, the data suggest that infections may play some role in the pathogenesis of EBVassociated germinal centre lymphomas. Consistent with this idea, HL incidence shows a curious seasonality (Newell et al, 1985;Douglas et al, 1996;Reiman et al, 2003).…”

“…Lossius et al reported that there was a seasonal fluctuation of infectious mononucleosis with a larger proportion of the individuals reporting infectious mononucleosis during spring compared to autumn in their study which they investigated relationship of EBV and multiple sclerosis [11]. A peak incidence during June to August was reported among for EBV-positive pediatric Hodgkin's lymphoma patients in the other study [12]. It was surprising for us to identify EBV peak incidence in the summer and autumn seasons in adenotonsillar diseases.…”

“…EBV was also more frequent in duodenal ulcer patients than in GERD (p ¼ 0.046) and functional dyspepsia cases (0.041), although the significance is only marginal (Figure 2). Genital, oral and mucocutaneous ulcers 3,4 Gastric lymphoepithelial carcinoma 5 Burkitt lymphoma 5 B-cell, NK/T cell tumors 5 Paediatric Hodgkin's lymphoma 6 Type 1 diabetes mellitus? 7 Co-infection with H. pylori and EBV was found in 60.0% of duodenal ulcer patients, 18.18% of GERD and 12.90% of functional dyspepsia cases, the differences being highly significant (duodenal ulcer versus GERD p ¼ 0.000010, duodenal ulcer versus functional dyspepsia p ¼ 0.00014).…”

“…Infection with this herpesvirus can lead to a wide range of acute and chronic, benign or malignant conditions as listed in Table 1. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7] It was recently shown that a certain number of gastric carcinomas are associated with EBV infection. The presence of the virus in the lymphocytes around gastric tumours was first demonstrated in 1992.…”
