Seasonal distribution and variability of surface winds in the Indonesian seas using scatterometer and reanalysis data

Abstract: The distribution and variability of surface winds in the seas and straits in the Maritime Continent, or the Indonesian seas, are investigated using scatterometer wind measurements and reanalysis wind data. This study focuses on the detailed climatology of surface winds in the Indonesian seas and has significant implications for a better understanding of regional climate, meteorological disasters, and offshore wind resource. The monsoon winds predominantly blow over the seas along the routes formed by the coast… Show more

“…Every dry season known as southeast monsoon (SEM) (June-August), the southeasterly wind blew from Australia to Eurasian Continent, carrying warm and dry air over Indonesian region. In contrast, during rainy season or northwest monsoon (NWM), the northwesterly wind from Eurasian continent carried warm and moist air over the Indonesian region during December-February (Setiawan and Habibie, 2010;Alifdini et al, 2021). The period from March to May and September to November is known as the first and the second transitional seasons.…”

“…In Indonesia, including Semarang Bay, this is the dry season (Muskananfola et al, 2021a). The monsoon winds blow through the Maritime Continent or the Indonesian seas, mainly over the seas along the routes formed by the coastline of the large islands and the chains of the small islands (Alifdini et al, 2021. In the Indonesian seas, the monsoon wind is a key factor affecting the regional climate and oceanographic conditions (Susanto et al, 2006).…”

“…Angin berpotensi sebagai sumber pemenuhan kebutuhan energi karena merupakan energi terbarukan yang ramah lingkungan (Dewi et al, 2022). Kajian mengenai angin di laut Indonesia semakin menarik perhatian dalam pengembangan energi angin lepas pantai (Alifdini et al, 2021) . Sejalan dengan hal tersebut, memahami angin di atas laut Indonesia telah menjadi tantangan sejak lama dan semakin penting (Alifdini et al, 2021).…”
