Mass production, consumption, and disposal of plastics pollute the freshwater environment. Microplastics are small plastic particles less than 5mm in diameter that enter the ecosystem as a result of the breakdown of large plastic particles or the direct release of small plastic particles by climate and human activities. This study focused on investigating the spatial, and seasonal dispersal of microplastics in the surface water of Kumaraswamy Lake, Coimbatore which is located at the Latitude of 110’00.52'' N, Longitude of 76056’42” E. In different seasons, such as summer, pre-monsoon, monsoon, and post-monsoon samples were taken from the inlet, centre, and outlet. Microplastics made of linear low-density polyethylene, high-density polyethylene, and polypropylene were found in all sampling points. From the water samples, fibre, thin, fragments, and film shapes of microplastics were identified and most of them were black, pink, blue, white, transparent, and yellow in colour. The lake's microplastic pollution load index values were less than 10, which implies the risk I category. Microplastic concentration over four seasons was 8.77 ± 0.27 particles per liter and a high distribution was observed in the outlet area (10.70 ± 0.25 particles/L). Seasonally, the highest microplastic concentration was found in the monsoon season followed by pre-monsoon, post-monsoon, and the lowest in the summer season. These results emphasize that the distribution of microplastics spatially and seasonally wise may cause harmful effects on the fauna and flora that live in lake habitats.

Uma infinita parcela de fragmentos plásticos é invisível a olho nu, e constitui microplásticos de tamanho microscópico. Essas partículas estão transpondo as barreiras ambientais, onde já ocorrem aos milhares, se acumulando nos animais e até mesmo em nós humanos. Inúmeros estudos, especialmente na última década, têm descrito a onipresença dos microplásticos nos mais diversos locais do planeta (inabitados ou não) e os impactos associados, principalmente sobre a biota aquática. Mais recentemente, pesquisadores têm divulgado dados alarmantes, que comprovam a ocorrência de microplásticos em diversos tecidos e órgãos humanos, o que gera uma preocupação crescente sobre os danos à saúde, ainda praticamente desconhecido. Este ensaio tem como objetivo fazer um levantamento sobre a presença de microplásticos nos produtos consumidos pela população e sua ocorrência no corpo humano.

The most worrisome fraction within plastic pollution is that of microplastics (MP). A category of MP almost completely ignored is that of glitter. The objective of this study is to test the toxicity of nine types of glitter leachate (3 soak times: 3, 90 and 180 days) on model organisms in freshwater (Allivibrio fischeri, Raphidocelis subcapitata, Daphnia magna) and saltwater (Allivibrio fischeri, Phaeodactylum tricornutum, Paracentrotus lividus). An integrated approach was applied to obtain the percentage of ecotoxicological risk. The results show that (i) photosynthesizing primary producers are the most sensitive trophic level; (ii) algae transitioned from growth inhibition to biostimulation; (iii) D. magna showed higher sensitivity after 48 h compared to 24 h; (iv) A. fischeri responded more strongly in saltwater than in freshwater. The integrated data show a greater risk associated with the marine environment, with the highest risk for glitters that are hexagonal and composed of poly-methyl-methacrylate. Our multivariate analysis shows that the toxicity of plastic leaching is a complex phenomenon that depends on the sensitivity of the species, in some cases on the soaking time and on the medium, and is not clearly linked to the polymer type, the contact area or the colors of the particles.
