Seasonal flows of international British Columbia-Alaska rivers: The nonlinear influence of ocean-atmosphere circulation patterns

Abstract: a b s t r a c tThe northern portion of the Pacific coastal temperate rainforest (PCTR) is one of the least anthropogenically modified regions on earth and remains in many respects a frontier area to science. Rivers crossing the northern PCTR, which is also an international boundary region between British Columbia, Canada and Alaska, USA, deliver large freshwater and biogeochemical fluxes to the Gulf of Alaska and establish linkages between coastal and continental ecosystems. We evaluate interannual flow variab… Show more

“…There is a growing consensus that long-term changes in temperature and rainfall may alter the hydrometeorological and ecological processes of a region [11]. Over the past few years, many studies have been conducted worldwide to assess the changing trends in temperature and rainfall for different countries such as the USA, Africa, India, Norwegian Arctic, Nepal, Northwestern Himalaya [10,[12][13][14][15], using different statistical models and methods.…”

“…The April 1 SWE reconstruction indicates that there has been considerable variability in SWE levels over the past two centuries in the Stikine Basin, which is driven in part by multidecadal shifts in the PDO. The results of this study complement and expand on the existing understanding of the region's hydroclimate dynamics (Fleming et al, ). It demonstrates that the SWE values recorded in 2016 were likely among the lowest experienced within the past 200 years.…”

“…Of particular concern is the loss of mountain snow accumulation and related reductions in the snow‐ and glacier‐derived water supply, which are among the primary consequences expected from climate warming (Stewart, Cayan, & Dettinger, ). Knowledge about the possible range of natural hydroclimate variability at a variety of timescales is critical for the design and implementation of management strategies that balance riverine ecosystem services, such as recreation and fish habitat, with increasing economic and social demands (Fleming, Hood, Dahlke, & O'Neel, ).…”
