Seasonal Fluctuation of Suicide in Hungary Between 1970–2000

Abstract: The authors studied the seasonal fluctuation of suicide events in Hungary in a 31-year period. A summer maximum and a winter minimum were found in both genders. A second autumn peak did not occur among women. The suicide rate of Hungary fell markedly in 1998, parallel with the fundamental political-economical-social changes in the country. After 1988 the ANOVA statistic did show a moderate decrease in the seasonal fluctuation but only among those under 29 years of age. This young generation was the real "winne… Show more

“…In addition, suicidal behaviour follows a seasonal pattern, with a peak in the spring and early summer in both the northern and southern hemispheres (Näyhä 1981;Hakko et al 1998a;Rock et al 2003;Partonen et al 2004a;Rocchi et al 2004;Bridges et al 2005;Zonda et al 2005). For women, there seems to be a second peak in the autumn (Meares et al 1981;Näyhä 1982;Micciolo et al 1989).…”

“…There are minor differences between countries, but the main trend is that the ratio of suicides is high in the spring and summer, and low in the winter (Warren, Smith and Tyler, 1983;Massing and Angermeyer, 1985;Corcoran et al, 20014;Zonda, Bozsonyi and Veres, 2005). There is also a strong weekly pattern: the risk of suicide is high on Mondays and much lower at the weekends (Massing and Angermeyer, 1985).…”

“…This phenomenon can be witnessed in both hemispheres of the globe (Warren, Smith and Tyler, 1983;Massing and Angermeyer, 1985;Corcoran et al, 20014;Zonda, Bozsonyi and Veres, 2005).…”

“…Although the rate has decreased since 1998, it is still among the ten highest in the world. The high prevalence thus goes back several decades, and the numbers remained largely constant through Hungary's major economic and political changes [1]. The overall national suicide rate in 2010 was 24.92 per 100,000 of population, but differed considerably by gender: 37.48 for men and 8.47 for women [2].…”
