Seasonal fluctuations of abundance and age structure of Arion lusitanicus Mabille, 1868 (Gastropoda: Pulmonata: Arionidae)

Abstract: Arion lusitanicus Mab. has two peaks of abundance in the vegetation season. One falls on mid-May when immature individuals dominate in the slug population. The juveniles feed on young plants and grow rapidly. Another mass occurrence of the pest falls on August at the emergence stage of winter plants. The population density remains high during 4 to 6 weeks, almost till the end of September. Adult individuals are predominant in the slug population in late summer and autumn, whereas juveniles hatched from the egg… Show more

“…Thus, only a single cohort composes each population in discontinuous generation. This form of population dynamics is found in slugs of Arion lusitanicus (Kozlowski and Sionek, 2000), Deroceras reticulatum (Natalia et al, 2008), and snails of Theba pisana (Heller, 1982), Xeropicta arenosa (Staikou and Lazaridou-Dimitriadou, 1991). Although some populations of Xeropicta derbentina (Kiss et al, 2005) and Succinea putris (Kuznik-Kowalska et al, 2013b) exhibit semelparous and annual life histories, it is unclear whether adults disappear in a season.…”

“…Up to 30% of slugs hatch before winter, and the remainder the following spring . In the vegetation season there are two peaks of numbers, the first in mid May, and the second -characterized by greater numbers -in the first half of August (Kozłowski 2000a;Kozłowski and Sionek 2000b).…”

“…Initially it occurred only in one locality, in the village of Albigowa near Rzeszów (Subcarpathian region), in subsequent years it spread over a considerable area in that region, south-east of Rzeszów. In 1997-2007 it was recorded from over 100 localities in Poland (KOZ£OWSKI 2000, 2001, KOZ£OWSKI & SIONEK 2000, KOZ£OWSKI & KOZ£OWSKI 2011. In Poland the slug is synanthropic and most often occurs in large numbers in gardens and cultivated fields located near buildings, among shrubs, in parks, cemeteries and in wasteland.…”
