Seasonal land cover changes and its effects on essential services of haor and non-haor areas of Kishoreganj district, Bangladesh

Abstract: The study examines the seasonal land cover changes (SLCC) and its effects on essential services of haor and non-haor areas of Kishoreganj district. SLCC is a regular event of this district, particularly in haors areas which are large bowl-shaped depressions and seasonal wetlands where water is covered for 6 months in a year. Both quantitative and qualitative approaches were followed in this study. SLCC is illustrated using maximum likelihood classification (MCL) by ArcGIS and integration of other remote sensin… Show more

“…Finally, the category 'Flood Management Area' has been proposed in the framework to identify areas that are subject to inundation during extreme tidal events and rainfall events, unlike "Water Body" and "Wetland" (CCC 2012; Ast & Barua 2011). As a low-lying riverine country, Bangladesh has a variety of water resources locally known as dighi, beel, haor, baor, etc., which have been included in the secondary levels (Nahar et al 2018) (see Supplement 1 for definitions).…”

“…The polygons were drawn manually around the selected features to create regions of interest (ROIs). Confusion among the features was avoided by having satisfactory spectral reflectance wavelengths for each class [43]. Repeated segmentation and testing of previews of each land cover/use class helped to improve the accuracy [67].…”
