Seasonal variation in structure and function of gut microbiota in Pomacea canaliculata

Abstract: Gut microbiota is associated with host health and its environmental adaption, influenced by seasonal variation. Pomacea canaliculata is one of the world's 100 worst invasive alien species. Here, we used high‐throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene to analyze the seasonal variation of gut microbiota of P. canaliculata . The results suggested that the predominant gut microbial phyla of P. canaliculata included Firmicutes and Proteobacteria, … Show more

“…Emphasizing fiber-rich foods, prebiotics, and probiotics in one's diet can support a diverse and balanced gut microbiota. This, in turn, ensures that the microbial partners in our gastrointestinal tract effectively contribute to energy accumulation, which is not only vital for health but also for sustaining the vigor required for our daily lives [39,40].…”

“…Conversely, involution signifies the natural reduction in bone density and mass that occurs as people age. The gut microbiome has been linked to systemic inflammation [39]. Chronic inflammation is a key factor in pathological bone development.…”

“…Peptides selected for quantitation were subjected to homology searching within the 168 peptidases identified in the discovery proteomics; the search revealed seven peptides that were shared between peptidases and only one peptide assigned to metallopeptidase M20 (A0A2T7P6W3) matched to symbiotic Proteobacteria and Firmicutes reported previously in the gut microbiome of P. canaliculata (Table S6). [32][33][34] The relative percentage of each peptide in relation to their peptidase (classified by catalytic site) along the digestive tract is shown in Fig. 3 and Table S5.…”

“…The structure and composition of gut microbiota is impacted by temperature change; however, the significance of effects may largely depend on how rapidly the gut microbiota can be altered by a change in temperature ( Fontaine and Kohl, 2020 ). As in many taxa, longer term seasonal shifts in temperature are of the strongest drivers known to impact gut microbial communities, having been observed in both endotherms ( Maurice et al, 2015 ; Fan et al, 2022 ; Marsh et al, 2022 ) and ectotherms ( Kohl and Yahn, 2016 ; Ferguson et al, 2018 ; Li S. et al, 2022 ). On longer temporal scales (seasons or months), the changes of gut microbiota are mainly beneficial for host animals.…”
