Seasonal variation in the dietary adequacy of highland Pwo and Sgaw Karen (Thailand)

Abstract: The present report describes seasonal variability (postharvest, preharvest, harvest) in the dietary adequacy of highland Karen farmers (38 Pwo and 51 Sgaw mother-weaned child pairs) in Thailand. Both the Pwo and Sgaw exhibit little functionally significant seasonal variation in either energy or protein intakes, although there is significant seasonal variation in other nutrients. Sgaw Karen mothers and their weaned children had significantly higher intakes of energy, protein, and seven nutrients than their Pwo … Show more

“…We used a cross-sectional design, which limits our ability to make causal inferences. Additionally, dietary diversity is known to vary by season, suggesting our results could have differed had we conducted the FFQ at a different point in the year (23,24) . Lastly, previous studies have linked women's nutritional knowledge and empowerment to dietary diversity; however, we were not able to assess these covariates in our model.…”

“…Questions of contemporary dietary changes have been examined from other theoretical approaches, including epidemiology and nutritional science (Hatloy et al, 1998;Hu, 2002;Foote et al, 2004), a human rights perspective (Haddad and Oshaug, 1999), and nutritional or cultural anthropology (Fleuret and Fleuret, 1980;Messer, 1984;Ferguson, 1993;Omori and Greksa, 2002;Ulijaszek, 2003). Environment may be considered in some of these approaches, depending on the context of the research.…”

“…While the bulk of agricultural efforts for most Karen in this area remain irrigated-rice production for household subsistence and local consumption, some now grow produce for export and others hire themselves out as agricultural laborers. Several researchers have done work on Karen socio-cultural patterns, health, and demography (Kunstadter 1972(Kunstadter , 1983Lee et al 2006;Nakano 1980;Omori and Greksa 2002;Rajah 2008;Skeldon 1985;Walker 2001). Most of the detailed demographic work concerning the Karen was conducted by Kunstadter and colleagues during the mid-to late-20 th century.…”
