Surface measurements of O 3 , NO, NO 2 and NO x have been made over a semi-arid rural site, Anantapur (14.62°N; 77.65°E; 331 m asl) in southern India, during January-December 2010. The highest monthly mean O 3 concentration was observed in April (56.1 ± 9.9 ppbv) and the lowest in August (28.5 ± 7.4), with an annual mean of 40.7 ± 8.7 ppbv for the observation period. Seasonal variations in O 3 concentrations were the highest during the summer (70.2 ± 6.9 ppbv), and lowest during the monsoon season (20.0 ± 4.7 ppbv), with an annual mean of 40.7 ± 8.7 ppbv. In contrast, higher NO x values appeared in the winter (12.8 ± 0.8 ppbv) followed by the summer season (10.9 ± 0.7 ppbv), while lower values appeared in the monsoon season (3.7 ± 0.5 ppbv). The results for O 3 , NO and NO 2 indicate that the level of oxidant concentration ([OX] = NO 2 + O 3 ) at a given location is the sum of NO x -independent "regional contribution" (background level of O 3 ) and linearly NO x -dependent "local contribution". The O 3 concentration shows a significant positive correlation with temperature, and a negative correlation with both wind speed and relative humidity. In contrast, NO x have a significant positive correlation with humidity and wind speed, and negative correlation with temperature. The slope between [BC] and [O 3 ] suggests that every 1 μg/m 3 increase in black carbon aerosol mass concentration causes a reduction of 4.7 μg/m 3 in the surface ozone concentration. A comparative study using satellite data shows that annual mean values of tropospheric ozone contributes 12% of total ozone, while near surface ozone contributes 82% of tropospheric ozone. The monthly mean variation of tropospheric ozone is similar to that tropospheric NO 2 , with a correlation coefficient of +0.80.

In the present study, an attempt has been made to examine the governing photochemical processes of surface ozone (O 3 ) formation in rural site. For this purpose, measurements of surface ozone and selected meteorological parameters have been made at Anantapur (14.62°N, 77.65°E, 331 m asl), a semi-arid zone in India from January 2002 to December 2003. The annual average diurnal variation of O 3 shows maximum concentration 46 ppbv at noon and minimum 25 ppbv in the morning with 1σ standard deviation. The average seasonal variation of ozone mixing ratios are observed to be maximum (about 60 ppbv) during summer and minimum (about 22 ppbv) in the monsoon period. The monthly daytime and nighttime average surface ozone concentration shows a maximum (55±7 ppbv; 37±7.3 ppbv) in March and minimum (28±3.4 ppbv; 22±2.3 ppbv) in August during the study period. The monthly average high (low) O 3 48.9±7.7 ppbv (26.2± 3.5 ppbv) observed at noon in March (August) is due to the possible increase in precursor gas concentration by anthropogenic activity and the influence of meteorological parameters. The rate of increase of surface ozone is high (1.52 ppbv/h) in March and lower (0.40 ppbv/h) in July. The average rate of increase of O 3 from midnight to midday is 1 ppbv/h. Surface temperature is highest (43-44°C) during March and April months leading to higher photochemical production. On the other hand, relative humidity, which is higher during the rainy season, shows negative correlation with temperature and ozone mixing ratio. It can be seen that among the two parameters are measured, correlation of surface ozone with wind speed is better (R 2 =0.84) in compare with relative humidity (R 2 =0.66).

A climatology of surface ozone in the extra tropics: cluster analysis of observations and model results

Abstract. Important aspects of the seasonal variations of surface ozone are discussed. The underlying analysis is based on the long-term (1990)(1991)(1992)(1993)(1994)(1995)(1996)(1997)(1998)(1999)(2000)(2001)(2002)(2003)(2004) ozone records of the Co-operative Programme for Monitoring and Evaluation of the Long-range Transmission of Air Pollutants in Europe (EMEP) and the World Data Centre of Greenhouse Gases, which provide data mostly for the Northern Hemisphere. Seasonal variations are pronounced at most of the 114 locations at all times of the day. A seasonal-diurnal variations classification using hierarchical agglomeration clustering reveals 6 distinct clusters: clean background, rural, semipolluted non-elevated, semi-polluted semi-elevated, elevated and polar/remote marine. For the "clean background" cluster the seasonal maximum is observed in March-April, both for night and day. For those sites with a double maximum or a wide spring-summer maximum, the spring maximum appears both for day and night, while the summer maximum is more pronounced for daytime and hence can be attributed to photochemical processes. The spring maximum is more likely caused by dynamical/transport processes than by photochemistry as it is observed in spring for all times of the day. We compare the identified clusters with corresponding data from the 3-D atmospheric chemistry general circulation model ECHAM5/MESSy1 covering the period of 1998-2005. For the model output as for the measurements 6 clusters are considered. The simulation shows at most of the sites a spring seasonal maximum or a broad spring-summer maximum (with higher summer mixing ratios). For southern hemispheric and polar remote locations the seasonal maximum in the simulation is shifted to spring, while the absolute mixing ratios are in good agreement with the measurements. The seasonality in the model cluster covering background locations is characterized by a pronounced spring (AprilMay) maximum. For the model clusters which cover rural Correspondence to: O. A. Tarasova (tarasova@mpch-mainz.mpg.de) and semi-polluted sites the role of the photochemical production/destruction seems to be overestimated. Taking into consideration the differences in the data sampling procedure, the comparison demonstrates the ability of the model to reproduce the main regimes of surface ozone variations quite well.
