SEASONAL VARIATIONS IN HAEMATOLOGICAL INDICES IN THE GREY BREASTED GUINEA FOWL (Numida Meleagris Galeata Pallas)

Abstract: The influence of seasons on the haematological indices were studied in the grey breasted guinea fowl (Numida meleagris galeata pallas) in the arid zone of Borno State. Blood samples for haematological analysis were collected from the wing vein of the birds. The RBC counts and PCV values were significantly (P<0.05) increased during the hot weather period compared to the values obtained in the cold period. This increase may be due to decreased plasma volume resulting from increase in body water loss at high a… Show more

“…Moreover, changes due to storage related artefact increase size of RBC which results into increase in PCV and MCV. Wild type quails studied byAydin et al (2008) have similar RBC content and MCHC with that of grower female and male respectively Onyeyili et al (1992). worked on six to eight months old grey breasted Guinea fowl which corroborates with adult quails with respect to PCV.…”

“…Hematology, or the study and use of blood cells such as red cells (erythrocytes), white cells (leucocytes), and platelets (thrombocytes), is a branch of medicine that studies the quantities and morphology of blood's biological elements in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders [1,2]. Hematological tests are helpful in diagnosing and determining the extent of blood loss in a variety of disorders [3,4]. Hematological investigations are important for better understanding the relationship between blood properties and the environment [5] and could be useful in the selection of animals that are genetically resistant to particular diseases and environmental circumstances [6].…”

“…Haematological parameters have commonly been used as indicators of physiological conditions and nutritional deficiency in chickens. Onyeyili et al (1991) stressed on the importance of haematological evaluation in poultry as a valuable aid in the diagnosis of many diseases and in determining the exact of damage to blood cells. Dietary components affect the blood profile of healthy birds.…”
