Seasonal variations in spatial usage by the estuarine dolphin, Sotalia guianensis (van Bénéden, 1864) (Cetacea; Delphinidae) at its southern limit of distribution

Abstract: The use of space by the resident population of estuarine dolphins (Sotalia guianensis) in Norte Bay, southern Brazil was studied by boat surveys between 2000 and 2003. Data such as the geographical position and group size was collected at 5-minute intervals using focal-group sampling. The distribution and seasonal and daily group home-ranges were estimated using a GIS (Geographic Information System) environment. The dolphins did not use the area homogeneously, restricting their activities to a well-defined are… Show more

“…At the southernmost limit of its distribution, this species has a resident population which was observed to have increased movements during winter (Wedekin et al 2007). The wider distribution of this species during winter should be taken into consideration; however, the increased fisheries activities in the region should not be ignored.…”

“…The high number of strandings of franciscanas in July may be related to blue fish, mullet, and manjuva fisheries, which are active during this time of the year. White croacker, Micropogonias furnieri (Desmarest, 1823), fisheries take place in this region from August to December, a factor that could contribute to a high number of strandings in September (daura-Jorge et al 2007). The latter authors also mention that drift nets are commonly used for this fishery, with mesh sizes averaging 8 to 9 mm.…”

“…Na Baía Norte da Ilha de Santa Catarina as observações de T. truncatus foram realizadas a partir de uma embarcação de 5 m de comprimento durante um estudo sobre a ecologia de S. guianensis, entre os anos de 2000e 2005, 2005, Wedekin et al 2007). As outras avistagens foram realizadas por observadores familiarizados com observação de mamíferos marinhos na natureza, entre os anos de 1989 e 2005, geralmente a partir de pontos em terra.…”
