“…Since approximately 2014, there has been a growth of empirical investigation into second-generation MBIs, which are asserted to be more congruent with traditional Eastern conceptualizations of mindfulness compared with first-generation MBIs. Second-generation MBIs differ from first-generation in that they typically (a) are overtly psycho-spiritual, (b) use a greater range of (normally secularized) meditative techniques such as loving-kindness meditation and emptiness meditation, (c) include ethics as a key component of the taught program, and (d) use an instructor training program that normally requires several years of supervised mindfulness practice (Van Gordon & Shonin, 2020).
