Secondary genepool of Australian Cajanus species contains sources of resistance to Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner)

Abstract: A narrow genetic base in cultivated pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.) limits the host plant resistance (HPR) to the devastating pest Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner). Earlier research on pod borer resistance in wild Cajanus relatives has mainly explored the tertiary genepool, making breeding for resistance difficult because of linkage drag. Previous investigations on a wide range of Australian native germplasm from the secondary and tertiary gene pools revealed resistance in the secondary gene pool, associat… Show more

“…Crop wild relatives are known to harbor agronomically important traits [ 4 , 5 ] which form an efficient and ecofriendly approach for pest management. The genus Cajanus consists of a single cultivated C. cajan (pigeonpea) with the rest being wild relatives in different gene pools [ 6 , 7 ]. C. platycarpus is a wild relative of pigeonpea from the tertiary gene pool that possesses a plethora of resistance traits [ 8 , 9 , 10 ], including towards the pod borer [ 11 ].…”
