Secondary Malignant Melanoma of the Larynx

Abstract: 2 cases of laryngeal metastases from malignant melanoma of the skin have been observed at the ENT Department of Padua University during the last 17 years (from January 1966 through December 1982). A critical review of the pertinent literature is made and the metastatic spread to the larynx is also discussed. The importance of routine indirect laryngoscopy in neoplastic patients ‘at risk’ is underlined.

“…This fact, at least to a certain extent, may be due to the position of the larynx as a terminal organ of the normal blood and lymphatic circulation [2], and, conse quently, it may be difficult for the tumor emboli to reach those termi nal organs. Furthermore, unexplained immunity of the larynx to cir culating tumor cells was assumed [3], Though laryngeal métastasés Disappearance of Metastatic Renal Cell Carcinoma to the Tongue by IFN-a…”

“…The most common primary tumor is melanoma of the skin, [22][23][24][25] and the most common site of involvement is the subglottis, followed by synchronous multiple sites. The prognosis is unfavorable, because laryngeal metastasis usually is associated with generalized disease in the late stages.…”

“…It accounts for less than 1% of all melanomas in the Western world and less than 5% of all sinonasal tract tumors [1,2,3,4]. Due to this rare incidence of SNMMM, previous studies have mostly involved case reports [5]. Other published studies of SNMMM have focused primarily on treatment options and imaging features [6,7].…”
