Secondary triatomine species in dwellings and other nearby structures in municipalities under epidemiological surveillance in the state of Paraná, Brazil

Abstract: Objective. Since data are scarce regarding secondary triatomine species in the Brazilian state of Paraná, this study investigated infestations in inhabited and abandoned houses and in various other (19/62, or 30.6%), followed by chicken coops (24/350, or 6.9%). The primary food source of the triatomines was the blood of birds. Nevertheless, in the municipality with the highest density of triatomines, the food sources included domestic animals and even humans. We found that 13.4% of the T. sordida and 13.5% of … Show more

“…The greatest risk (OR ϭ 60.85) was associated with the presence of chickens on the property. Similar associations with chickens have been found for other T. cruzi vectors, including Triatoma dimidiata (Latreille) (Zeledó n et al 2005), Triatoma sordida Stål (Guilherme et al 2001), and Triatoma infestans Klug (Cecere et al 1997). The presence of chickens in or near the home has also been associated with human T. cruzi seropositivity (Gü rtler et al 1998).…”

“…This finding should be evaluated considering the data from this region. Under the epidemiological conditions of north/ northwestern Paraná, T. sordida predominates in peridomestic environments, with high population densities, making possible diversification in feeding (Guilherme et al 2001) this may have contributed to the higher percentage of vectors infected by both lineages of T. cruzi. Furthermore, the proportionally higher occurrence of T. cruzi II in T. sordida is in accord with the literature, which shows a greater association of this genetic lineage with species of the genus Triatoma (Lana et al 1998, Pinto et al 2000, Yeo et al 2005.…”

“…Of these, T. sordida and P. megistus are the predominant species found in north/northwest Parana (Toledo et al 1997, Guilherme et al 2001. In southern Brazil, P. megistus is present in wooded ecotopes, only sporadically invades houses, and very rarely establishes colonies in a domicile.…”

“…Nos distritos de Formosa, Jataí, Morrinhos e Ceres, em Goiás, R. neglectus foi a segunda espécie com maior incidência no ambiente domiciliar 33 . No Paraná, esta espécie foi capturada em casas abandonadas na área rural 18 . Os levantamentos entomológicos feitos pela FUNASA/Secretaria de Vigilância Ambiental do D.F., mostram poucos R. neglectus coletados no ambiente domiciliar nos últimos anos.…”
