Secretory and Morphological Changes in the Baboon (Papio Anubis) Uterus and Placenta during Early Pregnancy1

Abstract: The study was undertaken to characterize changes in uterine endometrial secretory activity and morphology in the baboon between Days 18 and 32 of pregnancy. Proteins synthesized by the implantation site endometrium (RI) and non-implantation site endometrium (RIII) and developing placenta were analyzed by two-dimensional PAGE and fluorography. The electrophoretic mobility and localization of chorionic gonadotropin (CG) in the baboon placenta, and insulin-like growth factor binding protein-1 (IGFBP-1) and retino… Show more

“…In humans, IGFBP1 is a highly upregulated gene in the human secretory endometrium during the period of receptivity to implantation [78] and is localized to the endometrial LE, a subpopulation of stromal cells, and the decidua [79,80]. Similarly, IGFBP1 is the primary secretory product of baboon decidua and is stimulated by chorionic gonadotropin, the pregnancy recognition signal [81]. In addition to IGF ligand binding, IGFBP1 contains a conserved Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) sequence that can act as a ligand for the integrin heterodimer a5b1 [82,83].…”

“…It is possible that this differential expression of the two decidual proteins in the baboon is the result of the more programmed and delayed decidual response in the nonhuman primate in comparison to the human, as well as the potential requirement for a conceptus to complete the decidualization process [14,15]. Although the baboon decidual cells do not synthesize IGFBP-1 and prolactin at comparable time points, the cells that express IGFBP-1 in early pregnancy can be morphologically characterized as being decidual cells [16].…”

“…A rare second-trimester hysterotomy specimen (from a therapeutic termination of pregnancy) was also studied (n ϭ 1). Paraffin-embedded sections of baboon uterus from pregnant, pseudopregnant, and cycling animals were obtained as previously described [24,25]. Additional tissues from pregnant baboons were kindly provided by Dr. Bambra (Institute for Primate Research, Nairobi, Kenya).…”
