Secure data sharing with blockchain for remote health monitoring applications: a review

Abstract: Remote Health Monitoring (RHM) is going to reinvent the future healthcare industry and bring about abundant value to hospitals, doctors, and patients by overcoming the many challenges currently being faced in monitoring patient’s well-being, promoting preventive care, and managing the quality of drugs and equipment. Despite the many benefits of RHM, it is yet to be widely deployed due to the healthcare data security and privacy challenges. Healthcare data are highly sensitive and require fail-safe measures aga… Show more

“…It provides transparency in access control mechanisms, enforces role-based access, and creates a secure environment for patient data. The blockchain's encryption and decentralized storage significantly enhances data security, while smart contracts efficiently manage encryption keys, thus reducing vulnerabilities [39,40]. Notably, robust user authentication and transparent vendor security contracts ensure reliable access to patient data, particularly those concerning third-party devices [41].…”

“…Standardized terminology allows correct data extraction and coupling, generating a national pooled benchmark registry of AEs. This requires a government‐driven and financed approach and should comply with the general data protection regulation 64 . It will allow short‐term confidential feedback to the care providers on an individual and at the hospital level, as well as long‐term comparative data on the national level 13,65 .…”
