Mobile IP communication, like wired communication and mobile ad hoc networking, is vulnerable to Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks. In this paper, we propose using a lightweight packet filtering technique in different domains and base stations to reduce/eliminate the threat of DoS attacks on mobile IP networks. The proposed technique will be able to detect and filter out any suspected packets containing spoofed IP address created by DoS attackers. The results of our experiments indicate that our proposed technique can significantly reduce the effect of DoS attacks and improves performance of mobile IP communication. I.

The urging need for seamless connectivity in mobile environment has contributed to the rapid expansion of Mobile IP. Mobile IP uses wireless transmission medium, thereby making it subject to many security threats during various phases of route optimization. Modeling Mobile IP attacks reasonably and efficiently is the basis for defending against those attacks, which requires quantitative analysis and modeling approaches for expressing threat propagation in Mobile IP. In this Paper, we present four well-known Mobile IP attacks, such as Denialof-Service (DoS) attack, bombing attack, redirection attack and replay attack and model them with Stochastic Game Petri Net (SGPN). Furthermore, we propose mixed strategy based defense strategies for the aforementioned attacks and model them with SGPN. Finally, we calculate the Nash Equilibrium of the attacker-defender game and thereby obtain the steady state probability of the vulnerable attack states. We show that, under the optimal strategy, an IDS needs to remain active 72.4%, 70%, 68.4% and 66.6% of the time to restrict the attacker's success rate to 8.5%, 6.4%, 7.2% and 8.3% respectively for the aforementioned attacks, thus performing better than the stateof-the-art approach.

Similar to wired communication, Mobile IP communication is susceptible to various kinds of attacks. Of these attacks, Denial of Service (DoS) attack is considered as a great threat to mobile IP communication. The number of approaches hitherto proposed to prevent DoS attack in the area of mobile IP communication is much less compared to those for the wired domain and mobile ad hoc networks. In this work, the effects of Denial of Service attack on mobile IP communication are analyzed in detail. We propose to use packet filtering techniques that work in different domains and base stations of mobile IP communication to detect suspicious packets and to improve the performance. If any packet contains a spoofed IP address which is created by DoS attackers, the proposed scheme can detect this and then filter the suspected packet. The proposed system can mitigate the effect of Denial of Service (DoS) attack by applying three methods: (i) by filtering in the domain periphery router (ii) by filtering in the base station and (iii) by queue monitoring at the vulnerable points of base-station node. We evaluate the performance of our proposed scheme using the network simulator NS-2. The results indicate that the proposed scheme is able to minimize the effects of Denial of Service attacks and improve the performance of mobile IP communication.
