Abstract:Young generations make extensive use of mobile devices, such as smartphones, tablets and laptops, while a plethora of security risks associated with such devices are induced by vulnerabilities related to user behavior. Furthermore, the number of security breaches on or via portable devices increases exponentially. Thus, deploying suitable risk treatments requires the investigation of how the digital natives (young people, born and bred in the digital era) use their mobile devices and their level of security awareness, in order to identify common usage patterns with negative security impact. In this article, we present the results of a survey performed across a multinational sample of digital natives with distinct backgrounds and levels of competence in terms of security, to identify divergences in user behavior due to regional, educational and other factors. Our results highlight significant influences on the behavior of digital natives, arising from user confidence, educational background, and parameters related to usability and accessibility. The outcomes of this study justify the need for further analysis of the topic, in order to identify the influence of fine-grained semantics, but also the consolidation of wide and robust user-models.

The present paper reports on the testing of digital skills of students of the Faculty of Education, Univerity of Presov within their undergraduate training with the aim to estimate the level of digital skills in five defined domains. The IT Fitness test 2015 consisting of 25 items was used as the measure of the target skills. The sample comprised 532 students in bachelor and master study programs. The paper provides an interpretation of the selected research findings (mean total scores, mean scores for the given domains, discrimination power of items and domains). The results of digital skills testing point at the overall overestimation of Digital Natives Skills. With respect to the challenges brought by the educational practice itself by means of the implementation of digital technologies into pre-primary and primary education, it is necessary to modify the curricula of math- and iT-oriented subjects and include further activities allowing for the development of the lacking “Digital Skills”, since these are needed not only for students′ own study but also due to increasing demands related to the use of digital technologies in primary and pre-primary education.

It is argued that, young people growing up surrounded by digital technologies intuitively acquire digital skills and therefore do not need digital education or training. For this reason, with the belief that students already have digital skills, digital literacy education courses are reduced or removed in educational institutions. Therefore, it is necessary to emphasize the importance of development of digital skills in the education. The purpose of this research is to examine the digital skills of students in terms of different variables. This research was conducted as a survey research. The participant group of the research consists of 423 undergraduate students who have just started to study at a university. According to the results of the research, the digital skill levels of the students who attend the IT courses are significantly higher than the students who do not. Digital skills were significantly higher for the male students than for the female students. In addition, the digital skills of the students who took the IT courses from the teacher trained in teaching digital skills were significantly higher than the students who took the course from teachers from other professions.
