Sedative effects of the essential oil from the leaves of Lantana camara occurring in the Republic of Benin via inhalation in mice

Abstract: Lantana camara Linn. (Verbenaceae) is used traditionally for its numerous medicinal properties such as antimalarial, antibacterial, anticancer and anti-inflammatory. In the present study, we investigated the chemical composition of essential oil from the leaves of L. camara (LCEO) occurring in the Republic of Benin (West Africa) in comparison with LCEOs from other regions; evaluated its sedative effects in mice via inhalation administration; and identified the compounds responsible for activity. LCEO was extra… Show more

“…Caryophyllene oxide was administered to the mice at the same concentrations as COEO. Benzylacetone was used as positive control [24,27], and as shown in Figure 4, it significantly decreased locomotor activity (p = 0.04), thus validating the experimental model. In the present study, caryophyllene oxide significantly decreased locomotor activity at 0.0004 and 0.04 mg/cage by 56% and 57%, respectively, compared to the control group (F [7,36] = 2.436; p = 0.04) (Figure 4).…”

“…In regard to our previous experiments [ 24 , 25 , 26 ], mice were administered different inhalation concentrations of COEO (0.000004, 0.00004, 0.0004, 0.004, 0.04, or 0.4 mg/cage; volume of the cage 61.2 L). Lavender oil was used as positive control and triethyl citrate (TEC) as a negative control.…”

“…The major compounds reported were sesquiterpenes, such as (E)-β-caryophyllene, α-humulene, davanone, and germacrene D [15,[21][22][23]. Some monoterpenes were also found in high proportions, such as thymol, sabinene, and limonene [24][25][26].…”

“…Lantana camara has several subspecies and numerous ornamental cultivars [71,72] and as such, the volatile phytochemistry has shown wide variation [65] . In order to place the volatile phytochemistry of the specimens from Vietnam into perspective, a hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) was carried out comparing the major (37) essential oil components of 60 essential oil compositions reported in the literature [65,66,73–117] along with the four specimens from Vietnam ( Figure 1). The cluster analysis reveals five clusters and one outlier.…”
