Sedentary Behavior and Cardiovascular Risk in Older Adults: a Scoping Review

Abstract: Sedentary behavior is an emerging risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and may be particularly relevant to the cardiovascular health of older adults. This scoping review describes the existing literature examining the prevalence of sedentary time in older adults with CVD and the association of sedentary behavior with cardiovascular risk in older adults. We found that older adults with CVD spend >75 % of their waking day sedentary, and that sedentary time is higher among older adults with CVD than among… Show more

“…Physical activity is associated with many health-related outcomes. For older adults, physical activity has been found to be related to cognitive performance [8], frailty [9], weight control, and diabetes [10,11]. Additionally, physical inactivity among older adults to be associated with a higher risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality and cancer mortality [12].…”

“…Managing sedentary time is important for the prevention of disease and disability 14–16 and also for the management of existing conditions. 17 18 Too much sitting may have particularly deleterious consequences for older adults, in part because they accumulate the least physical activity of any age group. 4 Very few older adults are engaging in the relatively high volume of daily moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity that appears to be necessary to counteract the adverse effects of too much sitting 19 and may have neither the physical capacity nor the desire to achieve such a goal.…”

“…Older people (≥65 years old) are the most sedentary segment of the population (Leask, Harvey, Skelton, & Chastin, ). Estimates suggest that older people spend >75% of the waking day demonstrating sedentary behaviours (Hajduk & Chaudhry, ), which may be one factor contributing to the disproportionate CVD incidence and CVD‐related mortality noted in this population. In fact, sedentary time is higher among older people with CVD, in comparison with older people without CVD (Hajduk & Chaudhry, ).…”
