Sedentary time, physical activity, and sleep quality in fibromyalgia: The al‐Ándalus project

Abstract: Purpose To get insight into the potential significance of objectively measured sedentary time (ST), and physical activity (PA) intensity levels on sleep quality (SQ) in women with fibromyalgia; and to assess whether those who meet moderate‐to‐vigorous PA (MVPA) recommendations have better SQ than their counterparts. Methods Four‐hundred and nine women with fibromyalgia (age range 30‐65 years old) from Andalusia (southern Spain) were included in this cross‐sectional study. Sedentary time, PA intensity levels (l… Show more

“…This could indicate that they continued to perform physical activity even after the intervention had finished. This is relevant because the replacement of 30 min of sedentary time with physical activity leads to improvement in health-related quality of life, FM impact [43], and quality of sleep [44]. Future studies should investigate the effects of long-term exergame interventions on the lifestyle of women with FM.…”

“…To date, most of the previous research on ST and health in fibromyalgia has been limited to the study of total ST [7,29]. In addition, few studies have objectively characterized ST through accelerometry in these patients [18,30] and only one of them [18] reported the values of sustained ST (>1 hour).…”

“…Fibromyalgia patients, who tend to be highly sedentary, usually reduce their physical activity (PA) levels in order to avoid an aggravation of their symptomatology [2,3]. However, adopting this behavior might trigger a worsening of their condition [4][5][6][7][8]. Importantly, the risks of a sedentary lifestyle are present irrespective of the PA performed [9,10].…”

“…ST has been directly associated with higher risk incident of fibromyalgia [10], a complex multi-symptomatic and heterogeneous disease [11][12][13][14]. Furthermore, recent studies have shown that greater total ST is associated with worse symptoms and cardiovascular profile, and lower health-related quality of life in women with fibromyalgia [15][16][17][18][19][20]. However, little is known about the association of prolonged ST with symptoms in fibromyalgia.…”
