“…Hence, this interval is the equivalent of OAE 1a, represented also by, e.g., the Selli Level in Italy (e.g., Coccioni et al, 1992;Larson et al, 1993;Baudin et al, 1998;Erba et al, 1999), the Goguel level in the Vocontian Trough in France (e.g., BrĂ©hĂ©ret, 1988;Weissert & BrĂ©hĂ©ret, 1991), and by an organic-rich layer on Pacific guyots associated with a positive 13 C-shift (Jenkyns, 1995;Rö hl & Ogg, 1996). Detrital quartz, a high proportion of terrestrially derived organic matter, and relative abundance of radiolarians implying nutrient input suggest that the transgression reached terrigenous source areas (Erbacher & Thurow, 1997) or remobilized terrigenous material stored on the shallow platform (Dunbar et al, 2000). Platform drowning that was time-equivalent to the OAE 1a has been documented in several areas: e.g., the Urgonian Platform in France and Switzerland (Hunt & Tucker, 1993;Fö llmi et al, 1994), the Abruzzi Platform in Italy (D'Argenio et al, 1993), and the isolated Mount Kanala Platform in Greece (Grö tsch et al, 1998).…”
