Sediment Quality Assessment in Porsuk Stream Basin (Turkey) from a Multi-Statistical Perspective

Abstract: Heavy metals, which can be strongly accumulated and biomagnified along water, sediment, and aquatic food chain, are the most important inorganic contamination factors and have significant hazardous effects on the ecological balance of the environment. It is clearly revealed and clearly known that sediment may act as a sink of various contaminants and pose a significant risk to water quality [1][2][3][4][5].Porsuk Stream is one of the most important and the longest branches of the Sakarya River. Porsuk, with a … Show more

“…It was recorded from only one point of Sakarya basin (Çiçek 2020), Lake Eber (Mangıt et al 2017), and Akşehir lake (Freyhof et al 2011). Eber and Akşehir lakes have reached the point of losing a significant part of their water (Sener et al 2010) , and Sakarya basin is under pollution pressure (Köse et al 2018). Further, increasing industrial and agricultural pollution will significantly affect fish habitats.…”

“…Eber Lake and Akşehir Lake surface volume is gradually decreasing (Şener et al 2010). Also, Porsuk stream and its tributaries, which are accepted as the type locality of the species (Yoğurtçuoğlu et al 2020), are under the pressure of agriculture, settlement areas, and increasing industry (Köse et al 2018). As a result of climate change, a decrease in precipitation, and an increase in temperatures (Öztürk 2002) may cause the loss of the habitats of the species.…”

“…Statistical methods are very useful and important tools in assessing the multiple effects of pollutants on water ecosystems. Pearson’s Correlation Index (PCI), which is a useful instrument used in determining the relationships, and Factor Analysis (FA), which helps with explaining the variance of a large data set with a smaller data set of independent variables, are known as very important statistical indicators (Çiçek et al, 2019; Köse et al, 2018; Tokatlı, 2017; Ustaoğlu, Tepe, Aydin, et al, 2020; Varol et al, 2012).…”

“…Cluster Analysis (CA) is known as one of the most convenient multivariate statistical methods. It assembles the objects based on the similar characteristics they possess (Akın et al, 2011;Varol et al, 2012;Belkhiri and Narany, 2015;Köse et al, 2018;Atıcı et al, 2018;Çiçek et al, 2019;Tokatlı, 2020b).…”
