“…Information on the present-day structure of the Earth's crust and its deeper interior at various scales is of fundamental importance to the Solid-Earth sciences 1 These networks include ESF-EUROPROBE (Stephenson, 1993;Stephenson et al, 1996;Gee and Stephenson, 2006), ESFIntegrated Basin Studies (IBS; Mascle et al, 1998;Durand et al, 1999), Peri-Tethys (Roure, 1994;Ziegler and Horvàth, 1996;Brunet and Cloetingh, 2003), IGCP 369 Peri-Tethyan Rift/Wrench Basins and Passive Margins , TransMED (Cavazza et al, 2004;Spakman and Wortel, 2004), the ESF-Environmental Tectonics Research Network (ENTEC; Cloetingh and Cornu, 2005), ILP TOPO-EUROPE , ESF-EUROMARGINS, the French GDR Marges focusing on Northern Atlantic volcanic margins (Geoffroy, 2001;Callot et al, 2002) and young passive margins of the Gulf of Aden (Leroy et al, 2004;d'Acremont et al, 2005;Bellahsen et al, 2006;Huchon et al, 2007;Tibéri et al, 2007), IFP-VNIVGNI and IGIRGI scientific workshops in Moscow , the joint IFP-AAPG Hedberg conference in Sicily on fluid flow, deformation and diagenesis , many other federative European projects dealing with sedimentary basins, as well as summer schools dedicated to the study of the lithosphere and for promoting integrated modelling approaches coupling deep and surface processes (Solheim et al, 1996;Neubauer et al, 1997;Cloetingh et al, 1998a, b;van der Wateren and Cloetingh, 1999;Chalmers and Cloetingh, 2000;Cloetingh et al, 2001Cloetingh et al, , 2002a. in general and sedimentary basin studies in particular.…”
