Sedimentary loadings and ecological significance of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in a typical mariculture zone of South China

Abstract: Two sediment cores were collected from Hailing Bay located in a typical mariculture zone of Guangdong Province, South China, and analyzed for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The concentrations of the sum of 27 PAHs ranged from 62 to 1200 ng g À1 dry wt, and sediment in the study area was considered to be moderately polluted by PAHs. Source diagnostics based on PAH composition and principal component analysis suggested that PAHs in the study area were mainly derived from petroleum combustion, with disc… Show more

“…China is the largest aquaculture producer in the world, with a total production of 34.1 million tons, which accounts for 62% of total global production and 51% of the global value (Yang et al 2005, FAO 2010, Yu et al 2012. The area devoted to aquaculture increased from 11.2 × 10 4 ha in 1977 to 218 × 10 4 ha in 2012 (The People's Republic of China Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries Bureau 2013).…”

“…Macroalgal culture is reputed as an environmentally sound form of mariculture because of its extractive properties that can help to alleviate eutrophication and restore ecosystem services (Edwards 2015); however, impacts from suspended macroalgal culture are plausible and include the inhibition of water flow and light penetration, and the deposition of large amounts of tissue from breakage and drop-off (Zhang et al 2012; Zhou 2012). The potential for cultivating echinoderms in suspended systems remains experimental and so the impacts caused by suspended echinoderms have not been investigated (e.g., Yu et al 2012). This review grouped the impacts from all trophic levels as either chemical, ecological, physical, or socioeconomic ( Figure 5).…”

“…The release of synthetic compounds has included polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons that have been linked to the operation of boats supporting aquaculture infrastructure (Klumpp et al 2002;Yu et al 2012). Various persistent halogenated compounds (PHCs), pesticides such as DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane), and pharmaceuticals have originated in feed (Yu et al 2011b;Chen et al 2015;Fang, Bao and Zeng 2016).…”
