“…Most of these studies have been performed on deep sediment records (Arz et al, 2003(Arz et al, , 2006Biton et al, 2008;Rohling et al, 2008;Edelman-Furstenberg et al, 2009;Trommer et al, 2010Trommer et al, , 2011. However, numerous studies have been carried out along the Red Sea coast (Moustafa et al, 2000;Hein et al, 2011;Bantan, 2013, 2015;Basaham et al, 2014;Ghandour et al, 2016;Al-Zubieri et al, 2017;Nabhan and Yang, 2018;Pavlopoulos et al, 2018;Bantan et al, 2019Bantan et al, , 2020. Most of these latter studies dealt with past environmental changes based on micropaleontology (Abu-Zied and Bantan, 2013Bantan, , 2015Pavlopoulos et al, 2018;Bantan et al, 2019), and coral reefs (Moustafa et al, 2000;Manaa et al, 2016).…”

“…Jabal Kudumbul Island is subdivided into two principal geomorphic features, a volcanic mountain in the western zone of the island and the low-lying sandy shorelines in the eastern zone (Figure 1C). Winds, currents, and temperature are the main factors controlling the movement and distribution of sediments and the formation of various geomorphic landforms on the arid coast of the Red Sea (Basaham et al ., 2014; Nabhan and Yang, 2018).…”

“…These sedimentological and geomorphological characteristics of Quaternary deposits can be compared to those on humid volcanic islands and coasts (Davis and Fitzgerald, 2004; El-Sorogy, 2002, 2008; Mindrescu and Gradinaru, 2014; Mutaqin et al ., 2021; Oppenheimer, 2003; Tucker et al ., 2020). Sedimentary facies characteristics and processes on coasts with arid conditions have gained increasing interest in the last few decades because of climate changes, tourism projects, and economic projects such as wind energy production ( e.g ., Basaham et al ., 2014; El-Sorogy, Almadani, and Al-Dabbagh, 2016; Garzanti et al ., 2001; Nabhan and Yang, 2018, 2022; Petrovic et al ., 2022; Sen, 2008; Tawfik et al ., 2021). Most carbonate sediments in arid coasts exhibit different grain-size distributions due to abundant skeletal debris derived from reefs that are intensely affected by waves, currents, and wind.…”

“…Samples of sediment were collected from a fringing mangrove characterized by coarse sandy sediment, with a large part made by coral debris ( Basaham et al, 2014 ), which stands at the King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC), Saudi Arabia (22°24′N, 39°05′E; Supplementary Figure 1 ). The mangrove sediment has been used as inoculum for the cultivation experiments and three different media were used: (i) ONR7a, for 1 L: NaCl 22.79 g, Na 2 SO 4 3.98 g, KCl 0.72 g, NaBr 83 mg, NaHCO 3 31 mg, H 3 BO 3 27 mg, NaF 2.60 mg, NH 4 Cl 0.27 g, Na 2 HPO 4 × 7 H 2 O 89 mg, TAPSO 1.30 g, MgCl 2 × 6 H 2 O 11.18 g, CaCl 2 × 2 H 2 O 1.46 g, SrCl 2 × 6 H 2 O 24 mg and, FeCl 2 × 4H 2 O 2 mg; (ii) Mineral Salt Medium (MSM), for 1 L: Na 2 HPO 4 2.79 g, KH 2 PO 4 2 g, (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 1 g, Ca(NO 3 ) 2 4H 2 O 0.05 g, ammonium iron(III) citrate 0.01 g and, MgSO 4 × 7H 2 O 0.02 g; (iii) filtered Red Sea water (FSW).…”
