Sedimentology of Late Devensian glaciofluvial outwash in the Don Valley, Grampian Region

Abstract: Synopsis Detailed sedimentological investigations in the Don Valley, Grampian Region, have allowed the subdivision of the outwash succession into four main lithofacies associations, namely proximal braided outwash, distal braided outwash, overbank deposits and distal alluvial fan deposits. In addition two types of diamicton have been identified; firstly, basal diamicton sheets which mantle bedrock and are interpreted as probable lodgement tills and, secondly, more localised diamictons ca… Show more

“…There was certainly widespread ponding between East Grampian and Logie-Buchan ice to the north of Aberdeen, where subaqueous fan and glaciofluvial deltaic deposits abound (Aitken, 1995), for example at the Strabathie (Thomas, 1984: Thomas and and Mill of Dyce sites (Aitken, 1998) (Table 2) (Merritt et al, 2003, map 9). That this ponding was closely followed by a marine incursion is suggested by various reported finds of the bones of whales, seals and birds in isolated, locally fossiliferous deposits of red and brown silt and clay overlying glaciofluvial deposits up to about 30 m OD (Peacock, 1999;Merritt et al, 2003).…”

“…The significance of sheetflows increases espe-cially in the distal parts of outwashes (cf. Krigström, 1962;Olsen & Andreasen, 1995;Aitken, 1998;Zieliński & Van Loon, 2003).…”
