“…Usually, the salt induced inhibition of seed germination can be attributed to osmotic stress as a result of the decreasing rate of water uptake, or to ion toxicity as a consequence of the excessive intake of ions such as Na + which may change certain enzymatic or hormonal activities inside the seed [12,26,40,41]. Instead, alkaline stress, even if it has the same ion (Na + ) as saline stress factor, the added influence of high pH stress enhance the osmotic and ionic toxicity on seeds, but also can destroy the embryo [9]. This may be the reason of the lack of germination of the seeds exposed at 200 and 300 mM Na 2 CO 3 regardless of the cultivar used.…”

“…Fv/Fm may have also been slightly lower in all plants due to root rot, which was mildly exhibited at 21 DFS for all plants. The relationships between NaCl concentration and Fv/Fm suggests that C. sativa grown in hydroponic solution has less adaptive mechanisms to tolerate salinity compared to their near-descendent hemp-type cultivar, which have shown to partially tolerate NaCl in their aboveground tissues when grown in NaCl concentrations as high as 100 mM and germinated in 150 mM (Hu et al, 2018;Hu et al, 2019). Previous hemp research has suggested that NaCl stress can be tolerated through aquaporins in increased bast fiber development-as indicated by increased length in hypocotyl and radicles in NaCl stressed plants (Hu et al, 2018;Guerriero et al, 2019).…”

“…The optimum conditions for germination should enable the germination of all viable seeds using the simplest possible method, but germination testing process can be specific in the case of hemp seeds, due to high amount of oil in hemp seed. Moreover, studying seed germination patterns is important for successful cultivation of plants, as well as for understanding the establishment of plant species and their response to abiotic stresses (Hu et al, 2018).…”
