In this study the germination response of seeds of Atriplex undulata (Chenopodiaceae), a native of Argentina, to saline and alkaline conditions was evaluated. This species has potential as a rehabilitation crop for saline soils and is used as salt land pasture. The study involved three aspects: (1) germination response to three temperature regimes (20, 25 and 30°C); (2) the effects of saline (NaCl) and alkaline (Na 2 CO 3 ) stresses, osmotic potential (0, -1, -2 MPa) and the removal of the bracteole on germination; (3) the recovery of germination with and without the bracteole following exposure to a high level of alkalinity and salinity stress. The best germination temperature was 20°C. There were no significant differences in the response to salt and alkali treatments. Seeds failed to germinate at -2 MPa, while -1 MPa reduced germination, more so for the seeds with the bracteole removed. After a pre-treatment with salt or alkali stress, seeds exposed to alkali showed lower germination percentage if bracteoles were removed from the fruit.

The invasion process and the persistence of invasive species across environments can be explained by their tolerance to stressors, such as salinization. Urochloa arrecta (Poaceae) exhibits high invasive potential and has already established in various natural and artificial aquatic ecosystems. Here, we experimentally evaluate the effects of water salinity on the traits of three exotic populations of U. arrecta derived from naturally occurring populations across a salinity gradient. Specifically, we measured the difference in the number and perimeter of intercellular spaces for individuals from the different populations across three experimental treatments of salinity. Our results demonstrate that high water salinity levels affected anatomical traits in all populations. However, the traits of freshwater populations were the more significantly impacted by increasing salinity compared with populations sampled from naturally higher occurring salinity. Populations of U. arrecta established in places with certain degree of salinity can be more resistance to salt increases compared with populations established in freshwater habitats that are more distant geographically. However, the resistance of freshwater populations to certain high salinity levels suggests that these populations may exhibit rapid adaptation and to survive under some degree of salinity, demonstrating the species' high resilience across various environments.

The influence of incubation temperature, light, and salinity on seed germination of Arthrocnemum macrostachyum, Senecio auricula, and Lepidium cardamine was studied. Seeds were incubated at constant temperature of 5ºC and fluctuating temperatures of 15-4, 20-7, 25-10, 28-14 y 32-18ºC, both at 12 h-photoperiod and darkness. In fluctuatingtemperature treatments, the highest temperature was programmed to coincide with the light phase. Salt concentration ranged from 0 to 3% NaCl. Seed treatments lasted 30 days. Final germination percentages showed highly significant variations among species. Main effects of temperature, light, and salinity, and interactions of the three factors were highly significant on that parameter as well. Final germination percentage exceeded 68% in all species when seeds were incubated at 20-7ºC, 25-10ºC, 28-14ºC, and 32-18ºC with photoperiod and distilled water. Both percentage and velocity of germination decreased with salt concentration at all temperatures. At 2% NaCl concentration, only A. macrostachyum showed relevant germination percentage (57% at 20-7ºC). Negative correlation between salinity and germination were first manifested at higher temperatures (28-14ºC and 32-18ºC). For most temperatures, A. macrostachyum and L. cardamine seeds reached higher final germination when incubated with photoperiod than in darkness. In S. auricula, however, it was only true for 5ºC. In A. macrostachyum and S. auricula, germination velocity increased when seeds where transferred from hipper-saline solution (4% NaCl) during 6 months to distilled water. That change in salinity conditions also increased final germination of A. macrostachyum seeds when incubated at 15-4ºC. The existence of salt concentrations over 2% NaCl in the natural habitat of the three species studied, may transitorily prevent germination until rainfall reduces salinity in the soil.
