Seed-to-Seedling Transition: Novel Aspects

Abstract: Transition from seed to seedling represents a critical stage in plants’ life cycles. This process includes three significant events in the seeds: (i) tissue hydration, (ii) the mobilization of reserve nutrients, and (iii) the activation of metabolic activity. Global metabolic rearrangements lead to the initiation of radicle growth and the resumption of vegetative development. It requires massive reprogramming of the transcriptome, proteome, metabolome, and attendant signaling pathways, resulting in the silenci… Show more

“…Seed germination and seedling establishment are critical stages of the life cycle of gymnosperms and angiosperms. Germinating seeds and seedlings are particularly sensitive to stresses, so that environmental and biotic factors may dramatically affect plant ontogenesis and stress responses, with consequences on plant survival, growth, and yield ( Finch-Savage and Bassel, 2016 ; Pereira et al , 2021 ; Kandhol et al , 2022 ; Smolikova and Medvedev, 2022 ). Thus, these early stages of plant development are particularly prone to being affected by the interaction with NMs ( Szőllősi et al , 2020 ; H.M. Ahmad et al , 2022 ).…”

“…This network allows orthodox seeds to maintain desiccation tolerance during dormancy and germination [ 33 , 34 , 35 , 36 ]. Radicle protrusion marks the transition to the post-germination stage, with seeds becoming seedlings and losing desiccation tolerance [ 9 , 33 , 37 ]. This stage is typically associated with LAFL network silencing [ 5 , 32 , 34 , 38 , 39 ].…”

“…As result, ABI3 , ABI4 , and ABI5 were expressed in the embryonic axis before radicle protrusion but downregulated at the post-germination stage. Given that ABI3 , ABI4 , and ABI5 are central transcriptional factors in seed-specific events, including maturation, dormancy, longevity, germination, and post-germination growth [ 16 , 40 , 41 ], we propose that PsABI3 , PsABI4 , and PsABI5 also play a role in regulating the P. sativum seed-to-seedling transition [ 4 , 9 ].…”

“…Saline environments harm plants through physiological drought (Dantas et al, 2019), ion dysregulation (Habib et al, 2016) and, oxidative stress (Yang and Guo, 2018) and leads to a generated metabolic disorder (Zhang et al, 2021). Seed germination and seedling growth are the most vulnerable periods in the seed life process and germination is easily disturbed by numerous stressors that in turn, affect seedling growth and final yield and quality (Smolikova and Medvedev, 2022). Therefore, successful seed germination and healthy seedling growth is a necessity for sustained crop production.…”
