Seedlings of cassava varieties are responsive to organic fertilization

Abstract: In Brazil, there is already a recommendation for the production of cassava seed-cuttings for the production of seedlings originated from micropropagation, which may be extended for the production of seedlings obtained from cuttings from healthy plant stems, in order to avoid the spread of diseases. Therefore, it is essential to establish adequate cultivation substrates of easy acquisition which may stimulate the growth of seedlings, both to reduce the nursery period, as well as the seedling’s production costs.… Show more

“…However, a study by Biratu et al (2018) reported that cassava productivity can be improved through the integrated use of NPK and manure in Zambia. In Brazil, a study also showed that cassava varieties are responsive to fertilisation (Jala et al, 2019).…”

“…The plant Height/Shoot Dry Matter (H/SDM) ratio (cm g −1 ), where SDM is the Sum of the Dry Weight of both the stem and leaves, is a high-potential index used to predict field survival potential. This ratio is also used as a quality indicator in fruit [119] and forest species [120][121][122][123]. Some studies suggest that a low value of this index is desirable, as it is associated with more lignified and higher-quality plants [93,124,125].…”

“…Low cassava yield can be attributed to various factors, such as the lack of appropriate fertilization, which can make the crop more susceptible to pests and diseases due to inadequate plant nutrition for proper growth and development [ 4 ]. Additionally, insufficient technological input associated with planting methods, including the use of low-quality land, limited crop rotation, obsolete and low-yielding cultivars, and unpredictable rainfall patterns, also contribute to low root yields [ 5 ].…”
