Seedlings of Nymphaeaceae

Abstract: Seedlings of Nymphaea coerulea, N . lotus and Nuphar luteum were examined for monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous characters. The cotyledonary formation could be interpreted either as a single bilobed structure or as two separate cotyledons. However, the presence of an operculum and the recognition of a coleoptile and mesocotyl similar to those of grasses and sedges gave grounds for including Nymphaeaceae in the monocotyledons The form of the hypocotyl and radicle and the leaf-type supported a position, as a s… Show more

“…However, Wheeler Haines (1975) identified this structure in other Nymphaeaceae species as a mesocotyl. The mesocotyl is the first internode connection between the coleoptile and the plumule.…”

“…The mesocotyl is the first internode connection between the coleoptile and the plumule. This characteristic is common in Poaceae and Cyperaceae species, and although it has evolved independently in each group, this feature would be important to characterize these families as monocots (Wheeler Haines, 1975).…”

“…Apart from the medullary stem bundles and unisulcate pollen grains (at least in Brasenia, Cabomba and Nuphar) , the order exhibits one most unexpected feature, not, otherwise known outside typical monocotyledons, i.e., as HAINES & LYE (1975) have pointed out, an embryo possessing not only a single cotyledon but forming a coleoptile. Finally, the helobial formation of endosperm in Cabomba is worth mentioning.…”
