The fraction of directly-bound carbonyls of surface-adsorbed poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was determined using transmission Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The small size of the silica used allowed these measurements to be made directly in the transmission mode from dried casts deposited on KBr salt plates. Curve fitting of the carbonyl-stretching region allowed the estimation of both the relative amounts and also the relative ratio of the absorption coefficients for the free and bound carbonyls. The bound-carbonyl fractions were found to vary smoothly from 0.3 to 0.1 for adsorbed amounts from 0.5 to 1.8 mg of PMMA/m 2 . The bound fractions depended primarily on the adsorbed amount of polymer. Only very small, perhaps even negligible, direct effects of the solvent composition (toluene vs. benzene/acetonitrile) or molecular mass (32 to 420 kg/mol) were observed.

Interface properties of nano-silica/thermotropic liquid crystalline polyesters (TLCP) composites were investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis and differential scanning calorimetory. The crystallinity of TLCP in the composites drastically decreased with an increase of nano-silica content, depending on the surface area of the silica particles. Little size effects (40-400 nm) in the particles and strong interaction between silica surface and the C=O moieties of TLCP were observed by IR analysis. The glass transition temperature of TLCP (<20 nm) in silica surface increased about 20˚C higher than that in bulk.

The nanofiller dispersion greatly influences the properties of nanocomposites. Herein an ionic liquid, 1‐ethyl‐3‐methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, is introduced in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanocomposites for mediating dispersion of silica filler. As elucidated by rheology, the ionic liquid is able to improve the degree of retardation of chains diffusion induced by silica although it eliminates the elevation of glass transition. Simultaneously, the ionic liquid incorporated can improve thermal and thermal‐oxidative stability of PMMA due to trapping of radicals and blocking oxygen penetration. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
