Seismic Behavior of a Self-Centering System with 2–4 Viscous Damper

Abstract: This research demonstrates the efficacy of a 2-4 viscous device in self-centering rocking structures, which are an emerging low damage seismic design approach in seismic zones. These systems have distinctly different dynamic response compared to the typically considered fixed base structures. In particular, they have bi-linear elastic response and, in this study, the results assess the relative impact of 2-4 devices versus typical viscous dampers and 1-3 viscous devices. Performance is assessed by maximum disp… Show more

“…To examine the eigenfields inside the metamaterial, the volume force is considered as zero. Due to the peculiarity of the structure, equation ( 1) is extended to the elastic wave equation in cylindrical coordinates [17], as shown in equation (2), where u, v and w are the displacement components of the rectangular coordinate system, ρ is the density, t is the time, λ and µ are the elastic wave constants of material, and r, θ and z are the coordinates in cylindrical coordinates:…”

“…A large such as earthquakes mainly includes energy dissipation and shock absorption methods, where additional passive energy dissipation devices are used to protect the building structure. Although these methods are generally effective, they cannot adapt to structural changes [1,2]. Further, they cannot be utilized for existing buildings of historical, cultural or strategic importance.…”

“…The loading test of the new damper is conducted by MTS (as shown in Figure 4) (Hazaveh et al, 2020; Jamshidiha and Yakhchalian, 2019; Janbazi Rokni and Tabeshpour, 2019; Li et al, 2020; Noruzvand et al, 2020). Before the initial loading, the damper is preloaded.…”

“…In this configuration, the movement toward the positive direction closes the valves of Piston 1 and opens the valves of Piston 2, while the opening and closing of the pistons is inversed in the negative direction (Figure 26). Even if these devices are promising, they were investigated only in laboratory tests [176], and, to the Authors' knowledge, neither numerical tests on actual structures nor applications on real structures have been reported. Hormozabad and Zahrai [166] proposed the adaptive viscous damper (AVD) depicted in Figure 27.…”
