Steel-plate composite (SC) walls can be connected to a concrete basemat using a base plate and a set of anchors eccentric to the wall. The base plate can be separated into two parts so that the concrete of the wall and basemat is cohesive, and thus, the wall can be manufactured more easily and economically. Additionally, compression and shear demand are directly transferred from infill concrete to concrete basemat.Another change in the base plate connection of available tested walls involves transferring anchors to the bottom of faceplates. As a result of this modification, the base plate is removed from the force transmission chain, and the force is transferred directly from the wall to the anchors. After presenting the design criteria for this type of connection, three test walls with concrete foundations were verified in LS-Dyna.The walls were modeled with a split base plate connection and concentric anchors, and then compared to other types of wall-basemat connections. Three rectangular sections were then chosen as benchmarks and modeled with three anchors of different sizes to evaluate the effect of this parameter on walls behavior. The design equations presented for the single base plate connection were found applicable to design split base plate connections. Then all walls were compared to the test wall-fixed base wall connection. Finally, the models were analyzed with elastic walls to determine whether the foundation is stronger than the wall. [1] SC walls consist of two steel faceplates with concrete fill between the plates, with or without boundary elements. Tie bars or a combination of tie bars and shear studs can be used to achieve the composite action between the plates and concrete fill. An SC wall can be used when a relatively large seismic demand on the walls leads to dense reinforcement and large thicknesses in conventional concrete shear walls or relatively large wall thicknesses of the web infill and boundary elements in special plate shear walls. Liquid column dampers are adjusted based on the characteristics of the host structure and the type of external forces. It is assumed in most studies that the structure is rigidly connected to the ground, and the characteristics of the structure are invariant during external excitations. The performance of passive dampers may lose, or structural displacements may be increased by changing these conditions. This study presented a new method to find the optimal control forces for structures equipped with smart tuned liquid column gas damper (TLCGDs), considering variable characteristics of the structure and the soil–structure interaction. The proposed method calculates the gas pressure inside the columns by regularly adjusting and updating the frequency and damping of the TLCGD. The unknown or changed soil–structure characteristics are estimated by a system identification method, and damper parameters are determined through an optimization algorithm. The method was tested on 3- 9- and 10-story shear buildings under harmonic and earthquake excitation. According to the results, the smart damper more effectively reduced the structural displacement.

The protection of earthen sites plays an important role in the context of preservation of cultural heritage, especially in the inheritance and promotion of history and culture. The aim of the paper is to present the essential results of an ongoing research on a reinforced rammed earthen wall in Suoyang City (Guazhou, China). The wall vibrations caused by ambient actions were analyzed using the stochastic subspace algorithm to estimate the modal parameters of the wall. The frequencies of the first three orders are 3.566 Hz, 5.003 Hz, and 6.250 Hz, and the corresponding modes are first-order transverse bending, second-order left and right torsion, and third-order vertical bending, respectively. Then, according to the data of elastic modulus obtained in the lab, the finite element calculation is carried out, and referring to the results of field measurement, the revised elastic modulus value is 205.90 MPa. It is worth mentioning that the revised value is significantly improved from the original laboratory value, and it is also indicated that the seismic performance of the reinforced wall has been significantly improved. The present work is expected to provide a theoretical basis for reinforcement, protection, and seismic control of earthen ruins.
